Sports Camp Counsellor-in-Training (CIT) Program

The Sports Camp Counsellor-in-Training (CIT) Program at Balmy Beach Canoe Club is a leadership-focused summer opportunity for youth aged 14–17 who want to stay active, build confidence, and gain experience working with younger campers in a supportive, team-based environment.

CITs play an important role within Sports Camp, assisting counsellors with daily activities, helping lead games, and acting as positive role models for campers. The program is designed to develop leadership, communication, responsibility, and teamwork, all while staying engaged in a fun, outdoor summer setting.

The CIT Program
While the CIT program is centered on leadership development and supporting Sports Camp, it also gives participants a deeper connection to club life and the broader Balmy Beach community. Many of our most engaged youth members first became involved through Sports Camp or the CIT program, building confidence, responsibility, and strong relationships that carried forward into future roles at the club.

For CITs who become curious about paddling or other club programs, there are opportunities to explore next steps over time. Whether participants choose to pursue paddling, return as staff, or stay connected in other ways, the CIT program is designed to help youth grow, contribute, and find their place within the club.

Meet Laura Pett
Sports Camp Director
Hello! My name is Laura, and I am beyond excited to be the Camp Director for the summer of 2025! This is my 4th year at Balmy Beach as a camp counsellor, and 8th year being a counsellor in general. I am currently working towards my Bachelor of Education with an Honours in Psychology. As Camp Director, my main goals are to create a safe, fun, and enriching experience for campers. Ensuring that we provide opportunities for campers to learn new sports skills, improve existing ones, and develop teamwork and sportsmanship. Our camp strives to create an inclusive environment where all campers feel welcome and valued.

During the summer, you’ll often find me on the volleyball courts playing with friends or working at the Ashbridge’s Bay Adult Volleyball League. But come winter, my playground shifts to the mountains of British Columbia, where I ride my snowboard from sunrise to sunset! Working at Balmy Beach for the past two summers has been the best experience, from meeting lifelong friends to all the great campers! I am so grateful to be doing another year at this amazing camp! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the email sportscamp@balmybeachcanoeclub.com
