U14 Development

Ages 13-14
May - October, 2026

The U14 Development Program is designed for athletes who are ready to take the next step toward competitive paddling while remaining part of the Youth Sprint environment. Development athletes train across a longer season, running from May through October, with a focus on gradual progression in both training volume and competitive exposure.

During the summer, U14 Development athletes participate fully in the Youth Sprint half-day program and are invited to additional training sessions that provide increased time on the water and a greater focus on technical development and racing preparation. These athletes train alongside older performance athletes during additional sessions and receive coaching from experienced senior staff.

The Development Program emphasizes proper canoe and kayak technique, team boat skills, and racing fundamentals, while also supporting broader athletic development. Off-water training throughout the season may include running, dryland games, plyometrics, medicine ball work, and age-appropriate strength training. Across all sessions, we prioritize positive teamwork, commitment, confidence, goal setting, and sportsmanship as athletes prepare for future competitive pathways.

High Performance

Ages 15-30
May - October, 2026

The High Performance Program is designed for experienced paddlers aged U16 and up who are committed to pursuing competitive sprint canoe and kayak at a high level. Athletes in this program train year-round within a focused, high-performance environment and represent Balmy Beach at provincial, national, and, for some, international competitions.

Athletes train as part of a high-level training squad with multiple on-water and off-water sessions each week. Programming is tailored to support technical excellence, physical development, and racing performance, with an emphasis on both individual and crew boat progression. Training volume and expectations increase as athletes move through the pathway.

Led by experienced coaches, the program prioritizes proper technique, team boat skills, race preparation, and long-term athlete development. Equal importance is placed on mental skills, resilience, and confidence to support athletes competing in high-pressure environments.

Note: Athletes aged 19+ are required to hold a Balmy Beach Club membership in addition to paddling fees.
